Hi all I got a 2017 FX4 ranger only put an idrive and LLA led lights in and some bigger tyres so far. I've also put 2 TVs in the rear and wired in a dash cam. Looking forward to some great 4wding and adventure when I can find the time.

Just do it mate best thing ever. I use it on u3 but the economy settings are great in the soft sand

Ok guys, regarding the Idrive, everyone keeps raving about them, so please help with what i am missing here.

We picked up our 2018 FX4 auto around 2 weeks ago and drove it from Perth to Port Hedland, now bare in mind i am coming from a normally aspirated Troop Carrier i use for bush duties up here in the Pilbara so i drive it accordingly on the hwy 90-100 km/h.

Now driving the FX4 i find it's responsive enough around town, i find myself constantly going faster than i should be, i find it shifts reasonably smoothly, i am only using a light pedal ?

cheers

Everyone has different driving styles. Some want instant on and some want to slow the throttle response down.

Driving on sand or bumpy roads may require an lighter throttle response and adding it will achieve this. If you're a ricer then you may turn it up full to have 100% throttle when in reality you may only have pushed the throttle down 30%.

Saying this I do not own one, I just cannot justify the cost of the unit at this stage. In my opinion they are over priced for what they actually do.

After driving a Troopy the Ranger throttle response would seem good.

I found it very laggy and unresponsive so the iDrive suited me.

The other thing I found great was the different modes and settings.

Once in sand I alter it so it has sluggish response and doesn't bury itself.

The best thing I can suggest is to drive a Ranger with one fitted, then decide if it's worth it.

Ross, I find it interesting that you dial the throttle response down in sand, while Ford says they dial it up on the Everest in sand mode?

Cheers for the input guys, i guess i will sit on the fence a bit longer until i can try one for myself.

Back to reality tomorrow though, get the Troopy prepped today and back out bush for 5-7 days.

cheers

That is different driving to what I do.

They are just driving, having fun and of course you got to keep the momentum up.

I do surf fishing and do a lot of stop/go.

I don't want wheel spin in sand, it just sinks.

I have only had one recovery so far.

When using Maxtrax the last thing I want is wheel spin, all it does is tear the lugs off.

I agree with Ross, you need gentle throttle response in the soft stuff, that and low tyre pressures. Any hard acceleration will bury the car, which is also why you select 2nd gear to start off in sand.

I drop my tyres down to 18-20 lb

When in really soft sand I found starting off in 2nd gear low range good.

Of course different conditions wii require it be done differently.

WE are off to Arno Bay in a few weeks, endless klms of great sandy beaches, mulloway & snapper.
