EGR - When is it shut?

I've been playing with my Scangauge and have been monitoring EGT and EGR% for a while now. I've checked the readout with Forscan and both appear to correlate within 1% - 2%. I have found that the EGR reads 00.0% (closed) during a cold start warm up and when one floors the gas pedal. All other times, towing or cruising, the EGR is somewhere between 45% to 75% open. Hence the reason I have just ordered a catch can to minimise any crud buildup in the EGR system.

However, I have also noticed that during a DPF regen cycle, the EGR% also reads zero% open. This is contrary to what the 'experts' from a very reputable diesel service and tuning company are telling me. They claim the EGR MUST be open to varying degrees in order to control the burn temperature. Now I'm sure mine is all working properly, so either the Ranger is 'different', or the EGR% is not giving a proper reading during a regen cycle? I have no idea which?

Anyway, I'm posting this in the hope that someone here will be able to shed some light on what I am experiencing. I just hate not knowing. :?

Cheers

Maybe Dieselman777 can shed some light on what his does? As he had a MY17.

From memory my EGR acted about the same as your and it was all done in the name of fuel economy. It makes sense to close the EGR when a burn off occurs as they are trying to generate a large amount of heat. I bet if you monitor the Turbo Variable Vanes it will also give you another clue.

I will post a PID up over the next day or so for that as I have the turbo PIDS sorted now.

Which catch-can did you go for?

Hi Richard,
I've gone for the Provent 200 kit. I've also ensured it's a genuine Mann & Hummel and not a copy.

Hello Gerry,

My MY17 does exactly the same as yours - EGR commanded is between 40-70% unless cold or doing a burnoff. I left for a 4hr drive this morning and tried to log this via the OBDLink app but couldn't get it to work

I did notice a weird thing this morning - as soon as coolant temp got to 75 degrees the EGR went to 0% and exhaust temp shot up to 600 degrees for approx. 5mins. Instant fuel was sitting on 12ltrs/100km and then settled back to about 9.5/10ltrs/100km after that. Didn't do a burn for the rest of the trip. This would have to affect fuel numbers on the later models

Thanks Ben, same as what mine does, so it all appears normal. It's just that a so-called diesel "expert" was absolutely adamant that the EGR couldn't possibly close during a burn-off cycle as it was needed to regulate DPF temperatures. I did mention to him that the Ranger had a heat exchanger in it, so perhaps they are different to most as opening the EGR would not only cool the exhaust gas, but possibly push excess heat into the cooling system...??? I don't know? But he wouldn't have it.

I justed wanted some confirmation that what I was seeing was what was actually happening and that all was "normal". It now appears that is the case.

Thanks again Ben... mystery solvered. :)

Cheers

Hi Gerry I removed the butterfly completely and noticed better throttle response. I run a mann&hum catch can.

Hello Hoges, You mentioned you removed the butterfly. I assume this is in the intake that controls airflow?
