Geared Oil Pumps

While I'm doing transmission and cylinder head things I may as well replace the vane oil pump with a geared one to avoid the dreaded issues with vanes snapping off etc.
Has anyone on the forum done this already and if so are there any things to look out for ?

Vanes will snap off if a heavier grade of oil is used
A lot think that in hot weather and towing they need a heavier grade of oil
That maybe okay, I don't know but it should be replaced with the correct oil before winter sets in.

What would you define as “a heavier [and risky] grade”? I run Penrite synthetic 5/30 in winter and 5/40 in summer. Is the 5/40 pushing it?

5/30 will suffice

I run the recommended Penrite 5/30 full synthetic all year including towing a 2.5t van @ 100kph

Well the OE vane pump has been replaced with a gear pump.
It was a shit of a job to do but going by the oil pressures it was well worth it, while they used to be 12-50 psi depending on engine speed and oil temperature they are now 12-70 psi.
Let me know if you would like to know of my experience, bearing in mind that this installation was part of my investigation into my 3.2 overheating, I was told by several qualified mechanics that the head gasket had blown, they were all wrong !!

I just buy 10 litres at a time, normally Castrol 5/30 whenever Repco have it on special, they have it on a regular basis for around $45 for 5 litres.
