Fuel economy

I am currently on a trip and I have been monitoring engine and trans temp, instant fuel use plus others via an OBDLINK MX on a tablet.

So far the best economy has been at 96kph in normal drive, but if I get a climb I knock it into sports mode then back when I reach the top.

There are no really steep sections where I am but the climbs are fairly gradule but long.

Engine temp is between 86 & 88, and the trans temp is between 88 & 92.

My worst has been 15.7/100 klms over a 360klm stretch and my best was a mind blowing 12.6/100 klms over a 280klm stretch.

I am towing a 1,800kg pop top and I have had good towing conditions, really calm.

I think that is extremely good fuel economy and I know if I am cruising at 96 for 13/100 klms and I increase my speed to 100 the instant usage jumps to 17/100.

If I drop it down to 85 kph the usage jumps to around 15/100

If I leave the trans in normal mode on a hill and don't flick it into sports mode the instant fuel usage jumps, a lot.

Driven with a little thought the Ranger is easy on fuel.

Nice work Ross, please share your TFT math please. I think you are using the old math and your temps could actually be higher than that. I was going to say something the other day and I forgot all about it.

What is TFT math?

The math you have entered for transmission fluid temperature PID in the software on your tablet.

Min Value: 0

Max Value: 200

Header: 7E1

Mode: 22

PID: 1E1C

Equation: ((A*256)+B)*5/72-17

Try this and see where it sits. You will find you generally sit in the 90’s and will crack 100 at times. Operating temp for these boxes is in between 80 and 120 degrees. You will find that with this math the TFT temp when the engine is cold and not running will nearly be identical to ambient air temperature.

((A*256)+B)*10/16
((A*256)+B)*1/16

This one is my fault as I update Ultragauge and Scangauge math but not OBDlink or Torque. The old math was based on the fact that Ford own software should be correct. Unfortunately it is not so the Forscan is not. I need to get them to fix that also, I thought I already had.

When I started up from cold it read 180, within 3klms it said 420 and my default is set to "C"

Sorry OBDlink and Torque will use;

((A*256)+B)*1/16

Just tested and match my Ultragauge 100%

So 180 would have 18 and 420 would have been 42.

I haven't been anywhere but just turned it on, ambient temp is 9 and OBDLink says trans temp is 26.

What is you coolant temp in comparison to trans temp?

Just turned it on again, both temps are identical, 18

I will give it a good test tomorrow, got 850klms to do.
