Right Headlight not working

Hey so I have this strange issue. I thought the headlight bulb had gone bad, only the high beam worked, so I bought a new one and replaced it. Lo and behold the same thing...

So I tested the voltage at the headlight leads.

On the left side (low and high beam working):
- Low-beam on: Low-beam lead 12V, High-beam lead: 0.1V
- High-beam on: Low-beam lead 7V, High-beam lead: 12V

On the right side (only high beam working):
- Low-beam on: Low-beam lead 7V, High-beam lead: 0.1V
- High-beam on: Low-beam lead 7V, High-beam lead: 12V

It seems there’s a problem somewhere and I don’t even know where to start looking. The Low-beam having only 7V when it should be 12V is worrying.

Update:
So it seems like my BCM needs a reset to get the headlight back to working status, after I reprogrammed the TCM and PCM with an nGauge and custom BPT tunes.

Hi skumancer, I can't help personally, but I'm sure Stewart (SAEB) can throw some ideas at you to help.

If he doesn't respond soon, perhaps send him a PM as it's a crazy time of the year here at the moment.

Good luck...

Same problem with the right headlight assembly.
Could someone please help and show which is the correct lead to check the voltage also ?
I did a reset to BCM with FORScan as Skumancer mentioned, but problem persists.

Different vehicle to the one above, have you checked and cleared DTCs?

===BdyCM DTC B1D03:15-48===
Code: B1D03 - Right High Beam Circuit

Additional Fault Symptom:
- Circuit Short To Battery Or Open

DTC cleared but comes on every time headlights engaged.

Right hand headlight assembly always in high beam when lights go on.

Indeed different vehicle but same symptom, that's why i want to check voltage to see if the problem is on the headlight assembly or in the wiring.

Is it true that BCM module after 5 resets needs to be replaced?

EU Wildtracks are made in South Africa.

Not on a PX2, no.

I don't believe you will see the correct voltage without load. The is no reason you cannot test the voltage on each pin of the globe though, one side of meter to the body and the other side to the globe.

Have you replaced the globe even though it may look ok?

Have you added anything additional to the lighting circuit?

In my experience this is telling you there is a broken wire or a wire rubbed through,

possibly even a faulty globe as saeb suggested to check may cause a open circuit fault but I cant conform that.

I will check and update.

I finally got my cable, an OBDLinkEX, which is new and supposed to work well with FORScan without having to switch modes around.

Anyway, @saeb do you have any tips on how to reset the BCM or what to test to see if it's a BCM issue affecting my headlight?

Thanks!

Are the lights all standard or have you fitted any LED globes or any other additional lights.

They’re all standard. I haven’t changed them.

I cant help with the BCM reset but reading this type of problem is not uncommon and I have listed some info I found below. BCM reset appears to be a fix.

It would be important to ensure any possible causes are eliminated.

It can be caused by overloading the circuits so if any additional or different globes, lighting or load of any kind has been fitted to the car or the trailer plug wiring or wiring trailer lights from existing vehicle lights may cause problems.

It appears that there is a limited number of times the BCM will do an internal reset before it is damaged and needs replacing.

I have read that the BCM can be reset by battery disconnect for a certain amount of time of which I am unsure, then clear the code.

IOn a side note I left my battery disconnected overnight and lost a dash display!!

I didn't need a BCM reset after all. I read DTCs with FORScan and got a code for the passenger headlight (LHS drive here). Cleared it and things went back to normal.

I did find a bunch of different codes that I'm not sure about and will be researching and probably asking questions about.

Thanks for this. Disconnecting the battery actually didn't work for me, but like I said above, resetting DTCs worked.

I wonder if it needs both the battery disconnect and DTC cleared to restart?

In the end it ended up being a code for the right headlight, although I have NOT figured out the root cause, resetting DTC made it come back to life and it has not failed again up until now.

Code: Select all

===BCMii DTC B1D01:15-6C===
Code: B1D01 - Right Low Beam

Additional Fault Symptom:
 - Circuit Short To Battery Or Open

Status:
 - DTC Maturing - Intermittent at Time of Request
 - Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC
 - Test not complete

Module: Body Control Module

 Freeze Frame :
-GLOBTIM: 146734984 s - Global real time
-TOTDIST: 50267.0 km - Total Distance
-MAINECUV: 13.75 V - Main ECU voltage supply
-INCARTMP: -40 °C - In car temperature
===END BCMii DTC B1D01:15-6C===

===BCMii DTC B1D01:11-6C===
Code: B1D01 - Right Low Beam

Additional Fault Symptom:
 - Circuit Short To Ground

Worst case reset and if issue is not resolved it is faulty globe, wiring or BCM.

What some others have done in the past is to fit a relay and trigger the light that is not working with the one that is.
