I also found there are limits with an ARB bull bar.

I am not going in really rough country so I have enough ground clearance for the beach

Its in the worst possible location !! Murphy's law stated that if you need to get to anything on a car it was always in the centre underneath and ARB have confirmed it !!!
I had a local Katoomba crane mob make up a short nylon cable eyelet to eyelet 1200mm long to go from the ARB recovery eyelet that is easily tied to the bulbar when I'm off-road. Its then convenient to get to if its needed, I don't have to grovel under the car to get to it and the short cable is rated at over 20,000 k'gs Why ARB don't supply these as standard options is beyond me.
Any rigging or crane company will be able to make you one.

A side way recovery with the single point ARB system can create unwanted stresses, that's where a 2 point recovery is better, the load is shared.

I guess to qualify or negate your statement you would need to be an automotive engineer with considerable experience and qualifications in chassis design, I'm a retired mechanical engineer but I certainly dont have that sphere of experience so I'll leave that to the ARB designers.
I dont see anything wrong with the single central recovery point, other than its location and as I said I resolved that by having a short synthetic lead made up, steel eyelet to steel eyelet of around 1200mm long and I simply attach it with a "D" shackle to the recovery point under the Ranger before I venture off-road, that way if I ever need to use the winch I have an easily assessable connection. Thinking about it though, I can see one advantage of a single central recovery point and that is if its used the Ranger will be extracted in a straight line rather than being pulled to either the left or to the right, even with two points this does happen.

Hi guys.
I agree IB, ARB could sell a leash with every kit. They might be onto it, though. I went to buy some soft shackles to use for a short leash (less clanking I figure) and see that ARB now make them. Look okay. Two soft shackles and a 1200mm leash seem the obvious on-sell?

RP, as I put on the other post I thought your technique clever for deliberately getting out of a dicky situation, but if you equalize both points, aren't you applying equal force on each point? If you rig it so you aren't, don't you need to be careful you don't apply a force that twists the chasis. Isn't that what you are in effect doing? Pulling one side more and further than the other. A running V equaliser strap has to apply near equal force each side, I think the advantage might be that the forward mounting equalised point acts a a lever out from the wheel point and allows the sideways pull to add leverage at the bogged point from the pivot, but once again, the manufacturers warn against this, as it risks twisting the chasis. ?? That's what the ARB one is designed to avoid.

Of course, you do what you have to and I'm always astonised to see people's footage of sideways pulls through all sort of terrain without busting stuff. I'm sure if I did it I'd be trying to figure out how to reattach the wheel.

Sometimes a sideways pull is the only option, if you want to get the vehicle out.

Equiliser still pulls from both points but not with equal force.

Never twisted/broken anything with a 2 point recovery but with a single point I have.

Yeah Ross,
It's a trick that sounds like it makes sense. The physics intrigues me, as do all physics I guess.

So, why does it not pull equally on both sides, if it is equalised?

The physics would suggest that it must pull equally but I can see in my mind that in practise it's much more beneficial if you can get it to pull from oneseide more and swing it around the pivot point. Perhaps the vectors when off to one side mean the inside wheel meets more resistance and the outside has more leverage?

Got to admit I would rather the ARB bar had full strength points on each side and retained the reinforcing piece between the chasis. I'm not looking forward to the first time I get caught out stuck with the point in the quagmire underneath. Bound to happen.
Cheers
