Engine Knock & Ticking

Hello y'all,

I've noticed an unusual knocking & ticking on 1st starts in the morning. I live in Mautitius, and we are actually in winter here. Temps doesn't drop below 17c. However, i hear that ticking on acceleration and sometimes, when i park the vehicle after driving for about 70kms (daily driving), and i start her again, i can still hear it. Went to the dealer and asked them to do a PCM update. Got the vehicle back and they told me, not only they updated the PCM but also, the transmission(manual for me). Is the transmission due for an update? i don't know. What i want to know guys, is, how can i check my PCM version and how do i know what's the latest one for my truck. The guys at the dealership seemed lost.

Thank you

Manuals do not have a module, there is nothing to update!!

You can check your PCM calibration in Forscan, in the modules tab up the top once connected.

Mate i would warm engine up before driving. Use the throttle gently as what you are experiencing is diesel knock and that is not good for pistons and
compression rings. Also i heard of a glow plug upgrade thats done under warranty but its a big job. inlet manifold off etc.

I do wait in the mornings. And on the road, i drive gently till the temp gauge gets to normal. Glow plug? I believe that its used only to start the car cause diesel combustion is self sustained? Correct me if i am wrong.

Well, they sure fooled me or they don't even know what they are talking about. I'll check that PCM up. And where can i know whether its the latest version for my vehicle?

PM sent, your calibration is not the latest and is 15 months old. Newest for your vehicle is 5 months old.

I have a Feb 2018 Model and it has a pretty horrible knocking (too strong to call a tick really) when first run as per OP above. I have only done 33,000Km and I think it has been there for most of it. I do try to warm it up before driving but have to be very gentle on first drive. I can't imagine it is the injector issue I have read about but not really sure. I asked Ford about it at last service and their typical response was 'no, never heard of an issue however they are a noisy motor!'
Surely this cannot be normal for a diesel? I have asked my sister with a Ranger if they have the same but she says no problem?

Same as above, ask Ford to to PCM update and go from there.

Mine is one of the first PX2 and with latest PCM update still means everything is quiet. Have you checked PCM fault codes to rule out any other issues
?

Will they come up with my Torque app, just scan for errors?
Thanks Stewart

Just host it on youtube then put the link here and it will show.

You tube app will have the option built in and you only need your or a new google account to sort.

To start implementing onsite video is not something I'm looking at.

Hi Stewart,
Thanks. I am trying via Tapatalk as it seems to suggest it can host a file. This is a short video clip of the noise for any other owners who might question if their vehicle is making an acceptable noise.
My local Ford dealer took the ute overnight and agreed it was not acceptable when cold. As you suggested they have now done the PCM update and also did an injector re-learn.
Amazingly I had the vehicle serviced about a month ago in Adelaide and they did not perform the update, nor seemed to know about it!
I will test tomorrow morning when cold.http://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5d6f800444a ... 52_001.mp4

Not acceptable but as both updates have been done you should be good going forward.

My 2016 model has the same engine noise in seany-boy sound file ,my son who is a mechanic used a workshop diagnostic tool to check the injectors and found no 5 injector was injecting too much fuel intermittently causing the engine knock

Thanks Truckie
Ford updated the PCM and then relearnt the injectors. Big improvement as you can hear. The ute has only done 34,000 so in was told highly unlikely to be actual injectors by a mechanic.http://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5d7d7a51284 ... 28_001.mp4

I'm interested to know now whether these updates have ever been performed when I've requested them. noise has never changed.
I'm due for my 90k service now and will be using a different dealer to previous services.

How do i tell in forscan if i have the latest PCM and TCM updates?

TCM - Transmission Control Module
Part number: EB3P-12B565-AB
Strategy : EB3P-14C337-CE

PCM - Powertrain Control Module
Part number: EB3G-12A650-KE (latest known: EB3G-12A650-EFM)
Strategy : EB3G-14C204-EFJ
Hardware type: EB3A-12B684-DC

is that what this line means? Latest known being a more up to date file?

Yes, best just to ask Ford to do a PCM update.

So Ford won't do any pcm updates atm because apparently there's some 'corrupt' software out there that will wipe your whole computer.
Anyone else been told this lately, or is this bloke pulling my leg?

Doubtful, plausible although maybe a bit over zealous in his wording.

From what I heard the last tune is not ideal but this was either MY17 or MY19, I cannot rememeber now. But if there was a dodgy update it would have been pulled from the server anyway.

Another one that's had the ticking a rough sounding engine when cold and slightly when warm. How old is this PCM update before pay Ford £95 for a plug in for potentially no reason at all.

Part Number: GB3G-12A650-DA (latest known: GBG3-12A650-AHM)
Strategy: GB3G-14C204-AHF
Calibration: GB3A-12B684-BA

Many thanks as always
