Sync2 to Sync3 upgrade and Ford maps updates

Just a FYI for anyone that has upgraded from Sync2 to Sync3.

Map updates are not a problem and the dealer can plug the USB in and update the maps.

Although old and average we updated mine today without an issue, not that I expected any different a this stage.

Current version up to MY17 still seems to be 116 and the most current on newer vehicle is 117 which are still a minimum of 13 months old.

3 minute, plug and play.

You can download the .zip file from the Ford website. You will need to enter your VIN in order to check the database for what Ford thinks you have installed in your vehicle. I did mine today, and the Map_25013789187_Update.zip file is 25.02 GB, so don't expect anyone to email it to you. :D This .zip file is for Europe only, and I assume each market will have it's own file.

After extracting the files onto a 32GB USB flash drive, it took about two hours to install the map update. The update process is supposed to write a small .xml file back to the USB flash drive so the file can be uploaded to the Ford website as confirmation that my vehicle has the update. Unfortunately, this didn't happen, but Ford has a fix for it.

In the Troubleshooting section of the Sync Update webpage, there is an Interrogator .zip file that can be downloaded, extracted to a USB flash drive (I used an 8GB drive), and executed in the Ranger. This process took about 30 seconds and generated the .xml file that I uploaded to the Ford website. The .xml file is unique to the vehicle, as it contains the VIN and appears to have information for each updated module.

After reading the installation guide again, I see a difference in the on-screen instructions and the written instructions. During the update, both versions match for the first part of the installation, which takes about 30 minutes. The versions differ at the end of second part. The on-screen version pops up a window telling you to remove the USB device and restart the vehicle. The written version tells you to leave the USB device in during the restart so the .xml file can be written. Next time, I'll go by the written instructions.

Not that easy over here Mike. Yes in Europe you can do the maps, here we do not have access to them on the owners portal.

Wow! That is strange. I was able to check and start the download of the map update from the US, UK, and German Ford websites using my VIN, but it's possible that all websites point to the same update server. I only downloaded the map update from the German Ford website.
