10r80 Poor Shifting/Missed Gears

At 16k km Ford replaced the transmission in my 2021 Bi-Turbo 10-speed Wildtrak. It developed a whine on overrun and suffered from erratic shifting etc.

When the new transmission went in I couldn’t believe how much better it was. Then, just last week the family and I were travelling home from Lennox Head to Sydney and about an hour from home cruising on the highway the ute started violently jerking between gears (5th to 10th) and wouldn’t accelerate at highway speed. It was totally messed up with trucks barreling past at over 100kph and the kids were freaking. Slowing down and easing it home helped but Trans temp was around 118°C for an hour or so (I wasn’t towing and had no more than 100kg in the tub). Since that episode last Monday the gearbox has been terrible again with hard shifting, missed gear shifts and at times violent shifts. We have literally only done 6000km since the new gearbox went in.

It went into my dealer for investigation today but of course they said nothing was wrong nor could they find a fault code and fluid looks like the day it went in. That’s even after I shared videos and screenshots of my OBDApp readout.

Are the 10r80 gearboxes really that terrible or have I been really unlucky and got a second lemon transmission which is on its way for premature failure?

The dealer did the whole TCM PCM reset but it’s no better and I didn’t expect to be either. It’s a real bummer but I’m wondering if anyone else has suffered terrible shifting from their 10r80 and what they’ve done to help make it more “liveable”.

Cheers!

Ollie

Ford are well aware of the motor and trans issues.

Given the technical faults that plagued the Indian-manufactured twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel – and the clunkiness of the 10-speed automatic transmission – available in the current generation Ford Ranger over the past four years, making this engine the primary option in key models in the 2022 Ford Ranger line-up might make some customers wary about reliability and capability.

However, Ford insists it has addressed the fuel injector issues that prompted service campaigns for the Ford Ranger across two production batches in recent years.

Concerns about the twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and 10-speed auto have been expressed in Australia and Thailand and other markets. Drive has also experienced fuel injector failures on twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel Ford Rangers firsthand, and received customer complaints.

In a media briefing, Pritika Maharaj, the global program manager for the new Ranger, said: “Yes we are aware of the engine issues and the transmission issues, not necessarily very proud of those. But I think one of the advantages with the development of the next generation Ranger, is we’ve been able to take the learnings that we’ve had from the field and implement fixes and improvements for all of those issues.

Ring Ford customer support directly and lodge your complaint. Dealer should then contact regarding the issue.

Thanks, actually did that already so we’ll see how it goes. But I won’t hold my breath!
