SSM 46644 - Ranger and Everest/Endeavour Vehicles Equipped with a Diesel Engine - Cold Start and Running Concerns - Glow Plug Failures

Some Ranger and Everest/Endeavour vehicles equipped with a diesel engine, may experience difficulty in starting and running in cold weather. This may be attributed to a failure of one or more glow plugs. If after following the correct diagnostic procedures it is found that one or more glow plugs are found to be the root cause, ALL glow plugs should be replaced. For additional information, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM) Section 303-07B/C. Please use the available service labor operation number(s) from section 6 of the Service Labor Time Standards (SLTS) manual and refer to this SSM when completing a claim. SSM: 46644

I had a P0675 DTC (cylinder 5 glow plug) which was repaired under warranty. Looks like they didnt read this though because in the job notes they say they only replaced the one plug.

What was the date of replacement, after or before June 7th?

Mine had this issue, all plugs faulty from factory and needed replacing. Of course this was only discovered in the winter when it wouldn't start at a mere -5 degrees, was seriously annoying.

Appears to be a common occurrence.

First sign is blue smoke on startup even after waiting for glow plug light to extinguish.

If I wait for the light to extinguish then no smoke and start with out waiting then smoke.

Mine was only done last week and the only symptom (apart from the kids complaining of the exhaust stink in the morning) was the DTC.

So Interestingly I found that I had P0673 DTC (cylinder 3 glow plug) which freeze framed at 35000km based on the engine sounding a off during the winter months when cold. This was spotted by a friend who has an OBD2 scanner @39000km

After booking it in at my local dealer I picked it up with the following on the work card. "No Codes found, PCM firmware updated, engine operating normally"

This puzzled me so I purchased an ODB2 and after plugging it in at 41900km low and behold I have P0673 DTC (cylinder 3 glow plug) which freeze framed at 40103km.

Why did the dealer not see the code why did they not apply the service bulletin.... FML

Take it back and spell it out in black and white. Have them do the correct TSB or lodge a complaint with head office. Also remember the TSB is June 2017 onward and not every dealer reads them unless its pointed out.

I agree with saeb you have to be very specific with the service department. My conversation when I dropped it off went something like:

"My ranger has a fault code showing P0675 which is a glow plug fault"
"So you want us to reset the fault code?"
"No I want you to fix what is causing the fault code!?"

Hi Stewart!

Do we have news on latest set of TSB's?

A friend of mine just got a letter from Ford for a late 2017 Everest needing a PCM update to fix glow plug issues.

Thanks!

No mate, I have not bought a subscription for a while. I'm unsure when I will be paying the next one as yet.
