Ranger & Sand

I have been in quite a few 4wd vehicles over the years and I do 98% of my off road driving in sand.

As I type this I am on beach on the West Coast of SA and I am totally impressed the way the Ranger handles sand.

I did run into some very soft patches which required me to drop my pressures to 14lb for safety but once down to that it was easy driving.

Rescued a Triton some 15ks down a secluded beach, been stuck there for 36 hours and to say he was happy was an understatement.

He became a little upset when I wouldn't take his money but I simply refused to take it.

No good for fishing, too bloody windy.

The Ranger has its faults & weaknesses but sand driving isn't one of them😁👌

I tried several settings on the iDrive.

From disabled (stock throttle) to Economy 9, I didn't bother with any of the U settings or Auto

For me the best was E4, enough smooth response but not enough to wheel spin and sink.

U9 all the way. If you go deep enough, let me know as I need some stuff from Hong Kong.

We are home again and I am honestly bowled over by the way the Ranger handles sand, but you probably know that already.

Just think what you are doing and it will deliver relatively easily and safely.

If you are a newcomer to sand take it easy to srart, it is very different to mud.

Use H4 in manual mode if you drive an auto as much as possible, you want to keep rolling.

Already planning our next trip to Fowlers Bay on the Nullarbor Plain.

Was there 8 years ago, some great sand country that way, and plenty of HUGE Salmon.

On the sand subject - Do others turn off traction control or leave it on?

On my first outing a colleague (Hilux driver) told me to turn it off, but someone on the Ranger facebook group later said to leave it on!

I leave it on these days but it doesn't seem to make any difference at all - Not sure if it goes into some other mode once 4H is engaged?

Sand off, anywhere else generally on.

I've captured modes here (should be pretty close) - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0

Hi all,
Does anyone have trouble completely turn off TC, i hold the button down till it flashes and if i am in some really boggy sand and giving it a bit, the light comes and i can feel the brakes applying.
Cheers

I never had any problems like that.
