TLDR: attempting to fit cruise control on XL Ranger by adding XLS/XLT buttons.

Doing this sorta on the cheap, I can get a full (banged up and dinged) steering wheel, with buttons, leather and the rest for an outrageous amount of money especially for its condition.

A Facebook group friend offered me a set of just the buttons and trim plate for a steal since he sold his Ranger before the part arrived from the UK, I took it - Pics attached.

Now the fun part, supposed to be just a plug and plug job this... Uh no.

Ripped the airbag and buttons off after extensive googling on how to get it out, shoved the new buttons and trim in, admittedly without looking if all the wires were there, did the FORScan part and excitedly went for a test drive or 4 with stops along the way to set more things on FORScan.

So it's been a week and I finally came home from work early enough to "quickly" check the wiring only to find I'm missing a few wires on the Cruise Control side of the plug :( no biggie, I'll add those wires in, I have some electronics plugs that are about the same size and pitch and voila, it will be up and running in no time!.. LOL. No ways. I find 2 sets of electrical drawings, oone iI can download and print and the other won't let me print or open on a PC so mobile only and screenshots. Both are for PX2 Ranger and both are different and both have the Cruise and audio controls swapped, the Cruise is on the left and audio on the right - not sure why Ford did this but anyway...

I measured the outputs of the buttons and confirmed they are working, but what the drawing says and what I have are different. The pin out of the buttons is correct, but where they go into the clock spring plug, isn't. Apart from the Cruise everything works as intended which makes me feel the wiring is correct for those parts and all I'm missing are 3 wires between the Cruise buttons and clock spring.

Tomorrow I'm going to at least try to get the wiring harness only, armed with the UK VIN of the donor vehicle buttons and trim and hopefully a scrap yard that has the correct harness.

The end, for now.

Update:

So the Wildtrak/Models with Adaptive Cruise seem to have different wiring in the steering wheel.

Probably because it has SECM module instead of a SCCM module like the normal Ranger has, this means I haven't been able to modify/add the wires needed for the Cruise buttons to work, I've traced the pins out of the buttons and can confirm they are working and go to the missing pins on the Harness inside the steering wheel.

If anyone has the wiring diagram for the Cruise Control section of a NON Adaptive Cruise PX2 Ranger it would be a massive help

So this is starting to look like a bit of a lost cause,

A few weeks ago now, I bought a whole new steering wheel under the impression that all it needed was the wiring in the steering wheel, I couldn't get access to a reliable wiring diagram for a non-wildtrak Ranger so ended up getting the whole steering wheel for a more reasonable price of R3000, roughly 300 AUD. I thought cool, I'll be able to copy the wiring and sell the buttons and trim I got previously and at least get a part of my money back for that and have a nicer soft leather steering wheel and cruise control.

I was told on a number of occasions that the whole wheel gets fitted, enabled with FORScan and bobs your uncle, cruise works....

So far this seems to be a lie. I've now bought the buttons and trim, a whole new steering wheel, 1 month subscription to Auto Data (total waste of money with no drawings or anything, not like it used to be), a service manual and I have removed the airbag and steering wheel 6 or 7 times in all the fuss, checking wiring, neglecting to plug the airbag on properly, etc, etc.

I have errors now saying the configuration of the SCCM is not compatible and a right switch pack error.

When I ask on the original Facebook page for more info from the guys who supposedly did it... Silence.

So this supposedly quick and easy cruise control addition has turned into a R6000/600AUD exercise for a softer steering wheel, and I'm now reluctant to now try find a cruise enabled SCCM and throw more cash into something which may still not work, I'm already R3k short of getting the aftermarket stalk for cruise now and I fear that a used SCCM would cost about the same with absolutely no guarentee.

The disappointing thing is that I wouldn't have forked out for the whole new steering wheel if I had known that it wouldn't work, I was OK with taking the risk on the buttons alone but it's just spiraling out of control now.

Anyway, if by some miracle this works I'll share what it takes here, but honestly, why a vehicle that no sells here for R600K/60K AUD doesn't come standard with something as petty as Cruise control in 2021 baffles me, it's now days buttons and a software switch.

Hi Allen,

Have you come across this tread?
https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/ ... scan.3310/

May give you an idea of which modules and lines need changing by finding the equivalent in the SA Ranger.

I have the XLS with factory cruise control.
Could perhaps do an as built comparison and possibly find cruise control related differences

I have read that before, but reading it again has given me some insights that I had actually forgotten about completely, Thank you for linking it because it has certainly given me some inspiration.

Did you enable the Adjustable Speed Limiter in the IPC?
That function is part of that switch module.

You haven't said what complete steering wheel you got.
Is it from a bakkie with Adaptive Cruise Control or the basic Cruise control with Speed Limiter as on earlier 2017 xls?
That may make a difference.

Listing the changes you have made will help people to help you.

Hi,

So I've done this with a T6 ranger and made a thread on this forum, buy the steering wheel and enabled it on forscan (no bs), on the audio side it was a different story, I had to wire in the wires behind the clock spring to the radio I had

Looking at the photos you posted, it is the correct wheel ( it doesn't have the adaptive distance buttons)

And then for the diagram I have these out a haynes

I got my haynes from https://autobooks.co.za was somewhere around R500

That picture is of the modified XL steering wheel hence the missing wires.
This is why I ask which one he then subsequently bought.

I found your thread however you did this on a Prefacelift T6.
That does appear easy plug and play.

I got a 2017 XLT Steering wheel with the standard Cruise Control.

In SA only the Wildtrak gets ACC

OK, so instead of thumb sucking what I actually set IN FORScan, I went and had a look... @NathanSA maybe you can check if you have similar settings for these options or I missed one or two?

This is what I've currently turned on:

IPC:-
Adjustable speed limit - ENABLED
Cruise Control Switch - ENABLED

SCCM:-
RIght Switch Configuration - Ford 5 Way only

PCM:-
Cruise Control - Cruise Control

BdyCM:-
Collision Mitigation by Braking - with Cruise control
*this was first set to "Without Cruise and I enabled it now, which took away the original U2101 error in SCCM for the switch pack and configuration and gave me an error in ABS Module, U2101:00-8A which is module configuration incompatible. I can't find any setting in ABS other than adaptive Cruise control.

Cruise Control Switch - ENABLED Same as mine

SCCM:-

I did screen grabs of the settings but unfortunately left the document at work. Only have Forscan lite available at home

PCM:-
Cruise Control - Cruise Control I have this in the BdyCM - dont have PCM screen capture to see if that is there or not.

BdyCM:-
Collision Mitigation by Braking - with Cruise control Is "Without Cruise" on mine"

Didn't think to look in ABS module.

Thanks for this, I have now turned off collision mitigation by braking and the ABS DTC has gone. Coincidentally the SCCM errors were still present though, I just didn't press the buttons or see the DTC earlier.

Attached a screen shot of the list under the right switch pack.

I must also not that I have Cruise Control in BdyCM aswell and it's activated.

The Europe setting 21 rings a bell. I distinctly recall a Europe setting. Though i'm guessing ASLD means Auto Speed Limit Detection
Flip...
Then can try 18 if that doesnt work...
Either way you can just reset DTC's if it complains.

I also people have to do a relearn on the ABS as a final step but not sure about MK2 Ranger

Waiting for a temp license from Forscan then perhaps i can double check if that is if the laptop can handle the EX adapter.
Old WinXP so drivers may be an issue.
