I found out yesterday that the fuel regulating valve on my Fuel Injection Pump needs replacing - there were only two indications of this, the horrid smell of the exhaust indicating that the motor was running rich and the dreaded orange spanner causing the engine to shut down temporarily half way up the hill from the Brooklyn Bridge over the Hawkesbury River.
Of course there was nowhere to pull over and being on a weekend there was a long of string of traffic behind me returning home from the coast !! A classic case of how not to win friends !
The cost of a new complete pump is $1785.00  and the pressure regulating valve assembly which can be purchased as a separate item is $765.00   So given that Sydney Diesel will be doing the work, I've opted for the replacement valve alone as this can be installed on the Fuel Injection Pump without removing the front timing cover, removing the FIP and all that that involves.
On talking to Blacktown Ultratune who confirmed that the fuel regulating valve was defective by running my Wildtrak on their dyno - ( Fault Code P0089-00 ; Fuel Pressure Regulator Performance ) - and talking later with Sydney Diesel it would seem that the Ford 3.2 litre PX2 can have an issue with weak regulating springs in the fuel pressure regulating valve, some springs snap killing the engine permanently - but not fatally, and on some the springs simply deform - as mine apparently has - causing excessive fuel to be injected but the engine still continues to run, albeit with an increased fuel consumption.
My Wildtrak is out of the 5 year warranty period (01/02/2017) but the spares department at my local Ford Dealership have given me a trade discount on the new pressure regulating valve and Sydney Diesel are okay with me supplying it and them installing and commissioning it.
So, if your exhaust starts to smell ---- it could be an indication that you, like me, have to dig deep into your pockets.

Fuel metering valve, they get crud on them. Usually an easy fix is to connect a plug that suits to it and tap the wire on the battery and few times to knock it off. I carry a plug for a worst case scenario situation when traveling.

You could also try resetting the High Pressure Fuel System Learned Values, think it is in Forscan.

Did energising the fuel regulator work to free the unit up?

As Stewart advised I removed the valve and cleaned it and so far I've had no more fuel delivery issues. I ordered a new valve and I'll put it in my travel kit.
