Firstly, excellent work on the write up - very detailed and helpful! One query I do have, where did you get the harness adapter from as I would like to purchase one? Is there a part number to order?

Sync 3, now updated to 3.0.18025.

Sygic Car Navigation for offline maps now works in applink mode for Android. You will need Andriod Auto off for this to work and phone plugged into the USB hub. These are an alternative to Ford maps in case you have no reception and are usually updated a few times a year.

Flick him a PM, they do work and he does check them. He did have an additional and may still have it.

End result to this is after the hardware update from Sync2 to Sync3 and then the software update to Version 3, the Ford Owners website now shows my vehicle as having Sync3 installed and up to date. There is no relevance to Sync2 what so ever.

Downloading the latest asbuilt also shows that my asbuilt data has been updated to show the Sync3 for my VIN so if I have any issues in future then I should be covered. Also if a Ford service centre does an update, maps etc, again it will show I'm running Sync3 their end.

What is weird though is that is seems whenever you make a change to the unit is the online asbuilt changes also, so it is sending the data to their server when connected over wifi.

A good result overall.

I mentioned this during my little issue in that my asbuilt from Ford looked wrong. But you somehow had different values for my APIM that I had printed out before contacting you.

No idea what happened. I used the latest asbuilt for your vehicle and it sorted it, so don't over think it.

Now for more refinement! For an Everest is there a way to enable changing navigation while moving? I think I had this enabled before update but changing it now causes nav fault (after I backed up APIM ) and had to restore...

I have not looked at it further but from anywhere and everywhere I have read it cannot be disabled on Sync3. You can enter a street address while moving I think? but I tend to use google maps or Waze on Android Auto as they are up to date and google can translate my voice properly.

Have a play with voice control as it is a whole lot better on Sync 3 than 2. My vehicle it 2.5 years old and I have only started to use it, you can nearly do everything so give it a try.

Hi Stewart, can any SYNC3 unit be retrofitted to Ranger - As in, can a unit from a Focus or other FORD with SYNC3 be used or does it have to be Ranger to Ranger?
Assuming the above can be done, what about from other countries? Can a SYNC3 unit with GPS from another country be retrofitted and have GPS maps updated to Aus maps?

I cannot give a 100 percent yes on that. Brackets may be different, but brackets from your existing Sync2 may be able to be used? Apart from the brackets I will say yes, do it.

You would also want to rewrite the whole asbuilt from a Sync3 same model (2, 4 door etc.) Ranger before connecting to any form of wifi and once the change over occurs it will then update Fords server for that system with your VIN.

Do not nuy from other countries. European versions and most likely ours are 64GB, USA 32GB. Nave cannot be added to Non Nan and I doubt you would get maps for Australia anywhere at this point in time.

Great write up and nicely detailed pictures thanks guys. I'm in the process of doing this upgrade to my 2015 XLT ranger and will be getting the screen and apim next week. I am getting one out of a 2017 mustang and was wondering if you knew where I could get the asbuilt data to suit my car and also how to add my VIN into the apim for future updates.

VIN is pulled from BCM or PCM so will pre fill. Use a 2017 vehicles asbuilt from an XLT and this should be ok for you.

Also use this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GPS-Antenna ... SwnCFaPZgB GPS antenna. I found some others throw DTC's but this one is error free and works perfectly.

Success!!!! Everything installed and working great. I just have one question it's still running sync3 v2.2. How do I update it, I have tried over wifi but doesnt seem to pull the data, it just times out. I can't download it manually from ford as it thinks I have sync 2.

Log on to Ford Australia (Owners area, down the bottom). Sign up, add vehicle and follow the upgrade procedure. Before you do this let your new unit connect to the internet through wifi. What this will do is update the owner info from Sync2 to Sync3 for your vehicle or add a vehicle VIN that has Sync3.

If you get stuck I will try and do a how too, but I'm pretty overloaded with work so could not do it until next week.

I updated to version 3 myself a while ago, but today after a dealer service, a screen popped up saying something about a Sync3 update. It disappeared before I had a chance to read it properly, but that annoying wifi notice pop up seems to have gone.

They also said they updated the maps (I did ask if there was an update), but I have no idea f they did or not.

I think you will find it is trying to do an update that already is on the unit. Personally I would disable auto update again now.

Thanks for the reply. I already have a ford account with the vehicle in there, I have connected the car to wifi and left it for a while and also tried to search for an update but nothing. When I log into ford it still says sync 2, I have created another account and added my car again and still no luck.

A friend of mine has an FX4 can I use his update file or is it vehicle specific.

Try after a few days and see. If not add a VIN from the net. Google "Ranger XLT VIN 2017" and add then try. Just don't do the follow up and submit your update as complete unless you change the VIN in the file that is to be re submitted or the owner of that VIN will not be able to update.

All update packages I have seen appear to be the same, there is nothing in them per vehicle as such.

So I've finally managed to get hold of a SYNC 3 system - I'm just waiting on USB hub, USB hub adapter and GPS antenna. I just want to clarify a few things with regards to 'setup' of the SYNC 3 system. The SYNC 3 unit I purchased comes from a Wildtrak.

Do I need to write an entire SYNC 3 asbuilt from a SYNC 3 XLT before connecting to wi-fi? If so, where do I get this asbuilt from?

For you, send me a PM and I will send you a direct download link.

You can change your asbuilt at anytime. Do the normal asbuilt download from motorcraft for a 2017 model VIN, manual/auto etc. and write it to the APIM using Forscan. Google is your friend for VINs "Ranger XLT 2017 VIN" will get you something.

I have now tested 2 GPS antennas, currently waiting on this one to arrive and both have thrown a DTC on the APIM with code B119F - GPS Antenna - Circuit Open. Also randomly receive an error on the Sync 3 display showing a Navigation Fault, which eventually clears and the maps display. I presume both of these issues are related to the GPS antennas and I may have to just keep trying until I get a good one. Are these the same symptoms you found with other GPS antennas you tried?

I tried a few different GPS antennas myself which continued to throw errors. Eventually the maps would load and work like normal until you restart and get the error again. I ordered the one Stewart recommended and haven't had an issue yet.
