Hi there i have a 2012 px ranger with 240k on it. The led back lights have failed in the cluster on almost half of it and a few others flash on and off all the time.I have researched the net and it seems the early px had troubles with this and some were replaced under warranty. I have purchased a cluster from a wreckers and the manufacture date on it says 2015 so i was hoping this would solve my problem as the led problem should have been sorted by then. It fitted up ok and everything seems to work except the odometer. I thought it might have displayed the vehicle it came from km but there is nothing there at all. The trip meters all work and the fuel range and the gear selection display all work as they should. Is there a way for me to get my odometer back and have it set to display my mileage. Can i do any damage if i keep running it like this till i get it sorted. Can ford do this or is there a way for me to do it? Has anyone successfully achieved this swap?

Update

I rang ford today and asked if they could fix it they aren't sure if they can. They reckon they can do it with a new cluster but aren't sure if they can do it with a second hand one. They are going to try and download the settings from my cluster then install the second hand one and try to wipe it and install my settings. Hope i don't end up with two stuffed clusters :-( They reckon it might take up to 2 and a half hours and will cost $250 it's turning out to be an expensive exercise . I can't get it in for two weeks so i'll update once it's done.

Best to be done through Ford VCM and IDS. They will do a PMI on the new cluster which will write the correct asbuilt to your vehicle. ODO is probably not showing due to wrong VIN etc.

You may still have an issue if the existing cluster was higher mileage than your current one or you may be lucky and a PX1 may even pull the ODO from the PCM.

So its either read the old asbuilt then move to new cluster or let Ford do it.

Tks for your comments I think it's way beyond my capabilities so I hope ford can do it. The original cluster has 240k on it and the secondhand one had 57k on the picture that was on ebay where i brought it. Doing some research on the net it seems that you can increase the odo meter but you can't go backwards this is to stop people trying to profit by lowering a vehicles milage. The second hand one is 4 years newer than the original so i'm hoping that it won't have the problems that plagued the early models.

They should have no problem. Ideally they will put the original back in, start a PMI in IDS, swap out cluster, finish programming. A worst case on this would be an hour, programming should be under 5 minutes.

Ok job done and I now have my original odd meter reading on the secondhand cluster and everything is working as it should. I feel i may have been ripped off a bit by ford as they kept the vehicle for 4 and a half hours and charged me $260 but i'm sure it didn't take that long to do the job. The invoice doesn't have any labor time recorded on it just a report of what was done.

performed PMI (programmable module initialisation) with original IPC fitted.
fitted replacement unit as instructed then performed 2nd stage- build data configuration on new cluster.
performed odometer write process setting correct vehicle kms.
checked operation of new cluster- OK

Most of that is gobbly gook to me but if you had the right gear i imagine it wouldn't take that long to do. As for the installation i had all the dash apart for them all they had to do was unscrew three philips screws and unplug the cluster, plug the new one in and put the three screws back. They were suppose to call us when they were done but after 4 and a half hours with no call we went back anyway and found the bus in the carpark all done.
So not real happy with my first ford dealership encounter so i'll probably be avoiding them in future.

So all up with the second hand dash cluster it cost just over $400 not sure what it would have been if ford supplied a new cluster but a lot of coin to just get some led lights working I wish the original owner had got it sorted when it was still under warranty lol.

Yes, the whole procedure take under 5 minutes. Take into account, starting the laptop, chatting to a colleague, maybe a coffee and 4 hours is gone before you know.

A positive is, it is now working.

Enjoy your cluster.

Yes it is now working well and nice to be able to see how much fuel i have and engine temperature plus the disco of flashing back lights is finally gone.
It cost more than i planned on but happy now it's done. Hopefully this post will help any one that has the same problem and they will now know that it can be done.

If anyone in Vic needs it done, I can do.
