Hi everyone,

Who has taken their oil filler cap off while the engine is running?

Took mine off this afternoon while engine was running and oil sprayed out in fine droplets with some velocity!
Now have to do an engine clean to for all the oil droplets that went everywhere including the underside of the bonnet...

I'm thinking injector copper washer seal failed?

I was doing the screw driver stethoscope trick on the injectors to hear for abnormalities and 3 and 4 definitely have a louder tapping/ticking sound to them.

This is on a 2.2

Oil/fumes blowing out through the filler cap was from blowby in my day, compression blowing past the rings

I expected a bit of blow by but not to get a light shower of oil which has left my engine oily!
None of my previous vehicles did this. Just oil fumes.

Went to Ford dealership to see what they had to say.
Weren't aware of it as an issue or not so had them start up another 2.2 and it also sprayed oil out.
Seems Ford's cost cutting engineering means no baffle plate by oil filler.

Very little fumes/pressure out dipstick so i dont think bad blow by.
Just surprised at the the oil spray out oil filler cap.
All that oil on the cover is just from me taking the cap off.
Spray isnt as bad when engine cold.

My heavy oil fume breathing Isuzu didnt spray oil out but had a baffle there. Catch can was regularly emptied.

I had a Mondeo 2L TDCI and left the oil filler cap off once while I started the engine. I never did that again, as oil sprayed everywhere in a short amount of time. I don't think this was caused by ring blow by, but from the four pistons moving in the crankcase. It was a mess.
