I came across a Land Rover Discovery bogged to its belly in sand late today.

I approached it with caution as the sand was very soft, it just rolled away from the wheels.

Talked to the guy and discussed our options.

Tried Maxtrax but just not working.

I got as far away as my snatch straps would allow but no good, the slightest tension had wheels spinning and sinking.

Added his straps but it was the same, sand was too soft.

Last resort was the winch so I got positioned and started pulling, but the Ranger was getting pulled toward him instead.

Then I thought about the two sets of Maxtrax, laid them on the sand upside down and parked the Ranger on top of them and connected the winch again.

The Maxtrax started sliding but then with the lugs facing down they eventually dug in and I was slowly able to get the Rover out after several repositions, it was a relief and I must say very gratifying.

Well done mate. Just out of curiosity, what were his tyre pressures? I've come across some on the beach before and basically all we had to do was drastically lower their pressures for them to drive out.

It crazy how many people have no idea about tyre pressures in sand.

He started at 18lb Gerry but soon dropped to 10.

I was running 15, not game to go much lower when I am pulling as I have in the past spun the wheels on the rim.

I think that a Discovery was just too heavy for this situation.

Sand is fun, but it is not forgiving and disaster is always close by.

I have been looking at sand anchors for the past 6 months, I have yet to decide.

No hurry now, not going anywhere until next April, we hate travelling in hot weather.
