Hi, I would like to start a discussion on adding a DIY front camera to our Ranger Raptor.
Working with our Sync screen and very low budget.
I still find it difficult to estimate the front while parking.
And I have an idea which should work perfect as far as I can see.
But I would like to hear some comments on the practical installation. Before starting to take things apart.
Anyone interested to help finding the best solution?

The idea I have now should work great. And requires hardly any mayor modifications.
Parts;
- Front mounted cam, which angle?
- VGA signal selector switch 12VDC. This passes video signal from 2 inputs to 1, depending on 12VDC signal.
- Installation, power and video selection will be taken of lighting wires, 12VDC.
- No need to access dashboard radio.

Main doubt is to access video camera/cable in rear truck lid.
I would like to know if anyone knows details about connection of camera. Preferably with pictures.

Thanks.

Good luck achieving for under 50 euro.

Not sure how splicing with a splitter will solve your issue as the camera is only activation in reverse.

Sync 3 has one factory input.
Reverse is monitored across the CANBUS and is not a hardwired signal.
You cannot just tell the CANBUS signal to be reverse as you would have to intercept the message , block it and create a modified CANBUS message.

The reason you have not found a budget solution to your issue is there is no budget solution.

Hi, thank you for your response.

Solving the reverse is easy. As I plan the conversing boxin the rear trunk lid.

It will normally pass through signal from front camera.
But when reversing. The 12VDC signal (rear light indicator white) will activate it to pass signal of reverse camera.
When switching to drive again this will deactivate the conversion and pass front light camera.
And by delaying Sync3 option it will continue to show image on display for some 5 seconds, or when reaching 10mph.
So for parking this would be enough to see front camera image.
Also it would mean that nothing is powered while driving.

The CANBUS 9s something that I didn't know.
And I assumed it was some kind of a VGA wired system.

So you have any info on the camera itself? Is it a CANBUS signal straight out of the camera?
Or is it VGA, with an external convertor?
I would love to see the specifications of the CAM.

Thanks,

Camera is plain analogue camera. Nothing fancy, tap it and use RCA connectors if you wish.

Great RCA input selectors are readily available on the market.

Would you happen to know where the plug is located. I assume there should be one near the rear camera so it can be replaced. Is it in the lid?

It is all hardwired back the APIM.

Saying RCA was just giving you an easy option to add them rather than splice. Where you want to splice in is entirely up to you.

This is what I want to use.

Simple 2 input RCA inputs (front and rear cameras) and 1 output to Sync 3 system.

Front;
Front camera powered by daylight running wire.
So no current draw while vehicle is not started.
Same for wireless transmission to rear of the car.
So easy connections near the grill /headlights.

Rear;
Wireless receiver and RCA source selector powered by reverse light signal.
Again no drain when not started and in reverse. And easy close connections in the trunk.

And yes, main electrical parts can be purchased for less than 35USD. But I want to add some water sealing components. And of course some wiring is needed.

It looks so simple for me. And for this price and the ease of installation, I surely want to give it a try.

Quality of the final signal van of course be less than expected. But that would just be a matter of sourcing better components.

As I see it now, the principle should work.

But before taking the lid apart I want to know how it is physically installed.

Any information would be much appreciated. ImageImage
