Interested in hearing from those who monitor the egr temps. What sort of temps do you see under what conditions? Cheers

Any responses would be beneficial if noted as pre or post turbo.

EGT 13 temps around city on a 18deg day vary from 170 to 270
Temp rises quickly when moving away from lights and stop/start

Cruising @ 110 on a 22 deg day temp sits around 220
It rises & drops quickly with up/down hill

Towing a 2.5t van @ 100 sees temps up to 400deg but it falls quickly on a downhill run

On a DPF burn I have seen 650deg+

Yours will be EGT11 pre turbo. Straight out of manifold.

Ross's figures are post turbo.

I had both EGT 12 & EGT 13 Monitored for a while using Ultraguage.
From memory EGT 12 was hotter, pre turbo

It runs 200-400 degrees normally, but quickly gets north of 600 degrees when towing a 3T van up any sort of hill.
This is on the 2.0l Bi-Turbo.

Which is the best EGT measurement to monitor?

Maybe give EGT13 a try
I would expect temps to be higher on the 2ltr, pulling weight uphill will use the maximum boost of 30lb

Presumably EGT 13 is post turbo, so a bit less peaky in it's response to throttle input?

What would acceptable temps be; solo & when towing, and at what point do I need to start getting worried?

Why worry, it is what it is
No way to control the temp other than turn the motor off
Can't back off towing uphill

Having recently fitted the egr restrictor (Not block!) Plate I have noticed the car warms up significantly quicker and the egr temp runs at 400-600 while towing at 110kmh. Did some serious off road work last night while towing, temps constant at 250-450. Engine temp steady on 90. Air intake temp didn't budge over 20 degrees even on the steepest of hills while towing up rock steps and deep ruts. Winching into the night wasn't supposed to be part of the relaxing camping trip

Travelling around 80, no load and 19 ambient

Are egt and egr temps considered the same thing? My egr temp as per the the display on the ultra guage was running at over 500 degrees at 110kmh today fully loaded including heavy trailer. First time I've noticed the temp gauge sit above half on the dash. Car is blowinh a lot of white smoke on start up now.

The only EGR reading available to my knowledge is EGR percentage open
White smoke could be injectors or EGR failure and draining water into the motor
Check water level in the coolant tank.
If the level is dropping but no visible signs of water EGR failure is a possibility
If a blown head gasket vehicle usually overheats and coolant discolours due to oil in coolant

Thanks Ross. Stew setup my ultra guage and the display says egr...unless im reading it wrong? Have been monitoring the coolant level. No loss there thankfully. Its only been blowing white smoke on start up in the last 2-3 weeks. Car sat for an extended period prior to that. Brings back memories of my px1 that had the same issues of white smoke on start up till the motor went bang

Those temps are seen regularly when towing a 3T van up hills, but I've no idea what is safe. I've not yet managed to get a definitive answer on that. I've asked in a few places and nobody could give me an answer as to what temps were expected, and what difference I'd see taking measurements pre/post turbo.

My assumption is that this is normal for the Ranger, given that my Ranger drivetrain/exhaust is unmodified and it is being operating well within its spec's. Yes I'm towing a good sized van, but it is still under max tow capacity by around 600Kg and I'm not maxed out on GVM or GCM. Others have noted that they see temps in the mid-high 600's for DPF re-gen burns so I assumed this temp level is therefore OK for short periods.

Highest I have seen was 700deg for a short time when doing a burn
Watched mine doing a burn yesterday, peaked @ 645 deg

Because EGT11 is call an EGR temp sensor. Sensor is located in the exhaust manifold around number 3 and can be visually seen.

As discussed, check engine for DTCs with glow plugs. If they exist then this is your white smoke and generally a non issue.

Scanned the car today. A ton of low battery codes from who knows when. No codes re egr cooler, glow plugs, injectors or anything else. Did have a code for front right fog light out. But I knew that! Nothing related to why it's decided to blow white smoke
