I'm soon going to start a PLC based project in my Ranger and which, could include a small additional display but, I dont really want to go down that road due to the lack of space in the dash. Another option would be for me to output a video signal with the information from the PLC and run that the the Sync 3 display.
Is it possible to force the Sync 3 unit to display a camera feed on request? There are a few camera switch units around that could be used to flick between the actual reverse camera and the output from the PLC.
I'm thinking this would be a great way to display things like a pitch/yaw display or even any of the values found on the vehicle CAN that can be displayed graphically.
Many truck head units (MAN, Isuzu, Hino) these days can accept multiple camera feeds with some minor modification but is the Ranger too "clever" for this?

Looks like I may have found the answer to my own question - http://www.rostra.com/ford-sync3-blinds ... camera.php
However, all the compatible vehicles listed are US models so I'll drop them an email to see if they think it'll work on our cars too.

Rostra have replied to my email - They dont know if it's compatible with Australian vehicles, have no re-seller here and dont want to sell direct from the US.

You will find most of the Sync3 stuff was coming out of Thailand.
If you look closely at this https://camera-source.com/sync-3-multi- ... adios.html you will see it matches the first option in you link.
If you look closely at this https://camera-source.com/ford-universa ... -rear.html you will see it matches the second option in you link.
You will eventually track down where they are all buying them from but they are just re-branded.

Did anybody go ahead and get one of these camera switching systems to work? I'm interested, but concerned about compatibility of the overseas systems. For example, do they output NTSC or PAL? What does our Australian Sync3 unit expect?

All Sync3 units are the same.
