Some will know and some will not. So for those that do not know here is a simple brief run down and how the tyre should be mounted on the rim.
If yours are currently correct then you have a tyre fitter has some knowledge and I would continue to use them.
I could expand this and make it very technical but simplicity is key to understanding things and making them sink in.
Dots.
Yellow dot is the lightest spot on the tyre.
Red dot is the highest point on the tyre.
1. If your tyre only has the yellow dot then align it to the valve stem.
2. But if your tyre has a yellow and a red dot then the red dot takes precedence, so the yellow dot should be ignored and the red dot aligned with the valve stem.
3. Now, some wheels may have a drilled dot, raised mark or a sticker to indicate its low point. If your particular wheel has the mark then align the red dot to this mark.
This will mean you use the least amount of weight possible when balancing the tyre, this is a good thing and should also lead to a better balanced tyre.
An example below of an incorrectly aligned tyre.
It has been proven by many including myself that not aligning the dots correctly will lead to more weight being used.
