Hi Folks

I joined up a while back and have been lurking. Great site. I've finally recovered from an inconvenient knee replacement enough to tinker with the ranger. Got hold of one of Stewart's dongles (2 in fact - a multi talented fellow)

Huge success today, which I will post up later but quick q so I can pursue my changes further:

When setting up Forscan it asks if I have Sync 1 2 or 3. Of course, I don't know - so I closed it without selecting one and it seems to have worked wonderfully EXCEPT that it appears I should be able to now see the outside temp display on both the centre console and on the radio display but I only have it in the centre console above the steering wheel. I am wondering if this is due to me not nominating a SYNC screen at startup.
The xlts of my model have Sync3 but I assume the XLS has a lesser beast, looking in the manual. It only states I have SYNC.

Can anyone tell me which SYNC the 2017 XLS is?

Any help greatly appreciated and I'll post about my experiences today after I've had a final look.

Cheers

Mr PP

You can check it out easily.

On the main screen select Settings/General and scroll down to About Sync.

I think it should be Sync3.

Version3 is the latest.

Thanks for the reply Ross. I was hoping either you or Stewart might chip in. I've had another look in the screen settings and the XLS doesn't have the ones you've mentioned above. It does have settings, but it only shows V.5.11 and a whole heap of other numbers but no reference to Sync3 etc.

It's pretty basic. I think even if I tell it to set up for Sync 3 it won't actually rewrite anything and it will just show stuff I don't have as disabled. It already shows a fair bit of that, anyway. But I assume if I haven't told it I have a SYNC screen it can't switch on the display in the Sync screen (the radio screen, although it shows phones, music etc.)

It's a pretty piddling concern, just bugs me that we can't see the temp at a quick glance, although I've got it in the driver's display now.

While I've got you here, can you tell me if it is possible to switch it so that the courtesy lights (parkers) don't come on when you unlock the door?
Very annoying for others when you are camping. I've had a look and can't see anything?

Got to say, very impressive work has gone into this. Able to do all the stuff Ford should be tripping over themselves to do for us but aren't.

Cheers

Stewart would be the man for a definitive answer as to whether the XLS has this or not, but have a look for 'Silent Mode' in the IPC. That will stop lights, horn etc from operating whenever you lock/unlock the car. If it's there, enable it and see what happens. In the XLT you get an added check box in the RHS cluster screen menu.

Thanks Gerry,

I'll take a look in the morning. I wasn't looking for Silent Mode, but can't remember seeing it in the list. I bought the XLS because it was so much cheaper and pretty much the same as the XLT except for the tech. but now that I've used reversing cameras, etc. the thing I do miss is the big display and screen. Still, it's a great car and the things I'm doing here aren't huge, but it's great to get rid of some of the annoying bells and whistles.
I've kind of lost my love of tinkering with major mechanical things, but I'm enjoying learning about some of this stuff and seeing it work.

Thanks again.

I maybe should have left it to Stewart, I don't know the difference between XLT & XLS.

About the lights I am fairly sure you could turn them off by enabling Silent Mode using ForScan.

I done it with mine & like it.

I have done it on an XLS as well.

It comes up as a Menu so you can turn it off/on when you like.

Hi Ross and Gerry

Thanks for the tips. I selected Sync3 at setup and it didn't activate the temp display on the radio screen, no worries though, it's in the drivers display. So that's a win. Little thing but if it's there I might as well have it.
It did add silent mode to the list. Installed it and it added the choice to my vehicle settings display. So another big win. Annoying lights gone.
Still trying to decide whether to change my wheel size or not. My speedo is dead accurate now but my fuel consumption is out and dte a bit haywire. But I think I need to use asbuilt codes for that? That I could stuff up! :-)

I'll write up what I did and post in the appropriate thread, might help another newbie.

Thanks for the tips. Nice to be reassured when first delving into this, really didn't want to stuff it up and create any major headaches. Great site and members.

Cheers
Glenn

Glenn, did the XLS have a sports bar?

If yes then the switch on the dash that turned on the sports bar lights can be put to good use.

With Silent Mode enabled that switch will work without the ignition on.

Connect a light up to it for extra light in the cabin.

Hey Ross,

Yep, just a basic cargo bar. ARB put a blanking plate over the spot for the rear light on the back of the cab. The canopy has a great led across the rear tailgate which is activated by opening the top half of the tailgate and is switchable. I have looked at that switch on the dash and wondered what to do with it, though. Handy info in that link. Maybe a small led tucked in the side to light up the footpath side when needed. Hmmm, now you've got me thinking...
Thanks for the extra job to do! :D

Quite choughed that this first foray into Forscan went so well.

Thanks

Oh, forgot to mention that I figured out the answer to my original question. My XLS has just plain SYNC but it is the latest version. Clicking on SYNC 3 in the setup of Forscan seems to work fine. Figured this out by looking at the Ford AU sync software update site.

I now have SYNC envy. :?

Keep in mind Sync1 has not special changes except for maybe enabling outside temp. It is usually called the FDCIM and not APIM.

Thanks again Stewart,

That makes sense of the settings I was reading in the preferences. Still, managed to turn off the chimes, run silent mode, outside temperature. Definite improvement.
Oh, and your dongle works a treat. Thanks for spreading it around!

Think I have found a way to make these faster and it was by accident. I have found approx 85% read write speed improvement thus far although most users would not notice the difference.

I was pretty impressed by how fast it wrote, anyway, given I'm using an ancient laptop running w10.

I have a ELM327 wifi reader and have Forscanlite on IOS, also have it on a PC.

Unsure how to find silent mode in any menus in the above Apps and also on PC, I can connect to the Sync 3 on PX2 XLT with tech pack and read a bunch of data but silent mode doesn't show up anywhere?

Silent mode is in the IPC not APIM.

If you cannot see the IPC then you have a cheap ELM327 wifi reader. In saying that this is why you cannot see the IPC.

If you want to program then head to the store and purchase a proper wired programming adaptor so you can read all modules.
